China's Wind and Solar Power Utilization Exceeds 95% in 2024

In a landmark achievement for renewable energy, China’s utilization rates for wind and solar power have surpassed 95% by the end of 2024, according to data shared at the National Energy Work Conference. The National Energy Administration (NEA) attributes this remarkable feat to the country’s aggressive push toward green and sustainable energy development.

Record-Breaking Renewable Energy Capacity in 2024

China's renewable energy installed capacity experienced a record-breaking year, with an addition of over 300 million kilowatts in 2024, accounting for 85% of the new capacity installed nationwide. By year-end, China’s installed wind power capacity reached 510 million kilowatts, while solar power capacity soared to 840 million kilowatts, consolidating the nation’s position as a global leader in renewable energy.

Advancing Nuclear Energy and Energy Security

In addition to wind and solar, China continues to strengthen its nuclear power infrastructure. With 102 nuclear power units operational or under construction, the country boasts an installed capacity of 113 million kilowatts. By the end of 2025, China expects its operational nuclear power capacity to rise to 65 million kilowatts, marking significant progress in diversifying its clean energy portfolio.

Energy security remains a critical focus, with China achieving an energy self-sufficiency rate above 80%. This demonstrates a commitment to reducing dependence on imported fuels while transitioning toward low-carbon energy systems.

Transforming the Energy Landscape

China is rapidly constructing a new power system integrated with renewable energy and energy storage solutions. In 2024, the accumulated new energy storage capacity surpassed 60 million kilowatts, a critical component for ensuring the reliability and efficiency of renewable energy systems.

Efforts to support the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) have also surged. The country now boasts over 12 million EV charging stations, with 95% of highway service areas equipped with charging infrastructure, enabling a seamless transition to clean transportation.

Ambitious Goals for 2025

Looking ahead, the NEA has outlined bold plans for 2025, including adding 200 million kilowatts of wind and solar power capacity and increasing renewable energy consumption to the equivalent of 1.1 billion metric tons of standard coal. These initiatives aim to cement China's role as a global leader in renewable energy while ensuring environmental and economic sustainability.
