India's renewable energy sector has achieved remarkable milestones, showcasing its commitment to clean energy targets under the 'Panchamrit' goals announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the country made significant progress in renewable energy between December 2023 and December 2024.
Renewable Energy Capacity Hits 209.44 GW
India's total renewable energy installed capacity surged to 209.44 GW as of December 2024, marking a robust 15.84% increase from the 180.80 GW recorded in December 2023. The year witnessed an extraordinary addition of 28.64 GW, a staggering 119.46% increase compared to the 13.05 GW added in 2023.
Solar and Wind Power Lead the Way
Solar energy spearheaded this impressive growth, contributing 24.54 GW of new capacity in 2024. This represents a 33.47% increase in cumulative installed capacity, which rose from 73.32 GW in 2023 to 97.86 GW in 2024. Wind power also made notable strides, with 3.42 GW of capacity added, resulting in a 7.64% growth, bringing the total to 48.16 GW.
Growth in Bioenergy and Small Hydro Power
Bioenergy capacity expanded by 4.70%, reaching 11.35 GW in 2024 compared to 10.84 GW in 2023. Small hydro power also saw a modest 2.20% increase, with installed capacity rising from 4.99 GW to 5.10 GW.
Government's Vision for 500 GW by 2030
MNRE, under the leadership of Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi, has implemented key initiatives to accelerate India’s transition to clean energy. These efforts align with the nation’s ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
This record growth reflects India’s steadfast dedication to meeting its climate commitments while bolstering energy security. The figures underscore the government's success in scaling up renewable energy capacity to meet both domestic energy demands and international climate obligations.
