India Installs 28 GW of Solar and Wind Power Capacity in CY 2024

India Achieves Historic Milestone in Renewable Energy Capacity

India has solidified its position as a global leader in clean energy transitions by achieving a groundbreaking renewable energy milestone in 2024. According to JMK Research, the country added an impressive 24.5 GW of solar energy capacity and 3.4 GW of wind energy capacity during the year. This surge represents year-on-year growth of over 200% in solar energy and 21% in wind energy, propelling India's total installed renewable energy capacity to an astounding 209.44 GW by the end of December 2024.

Solar Energy Dominates India’s Renewable Energy Portfolio

Solar energy emerged as the star performer in 2024, accounting for 47% of India’s total renewable energy capacity. Utility-scale solar projects led the way with 18.5 GW of new installations—nearly three times the capacity added in 2023. The states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu played a pivotal role in this achievement, contributing a combined 71% of the utility-scale solar additions.

  • Rajasthan topped the chart with a remarkable 7.09 GW of new solar capacity.

  • Gujarat followed with 4.32 GW, while Tamil Nadu added 1.73 GW.

The rooftop solar segment also witnessed significant growth, adding 4.59 GW in 2024—a 53% increase from the previous year. This surge was largely driven by the success of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which enabled the installation of 7 lakh rooftop solar systems across the nation within just ten months. Additionally, off-grid solar systems contributed 1.48 GW, marking a phenomenal 197% year-on-year growth.

Steady Growth in Wind Energy

While solar energy stole the spotlight, the wind energy sector demonstrated consistent progress by adding 3.4 GW of new capacity. Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu emerged as the top-performing states, collectively contributing 98% of the year’s wind energy additions.

  • Gujarat led with 1,250 MW of new installations.

  • Karnataka followed with 1,135 MW.

  • Tamil Nadu added 980 MW, rounding out the top contributors.

India’s Renewable Energy Transition Gains Momentum

India’s unprecedented renewable energy growth in 2024 underscores the nation’s commitment to achieving its ambitious clean energy targets. Solar energy’s rapid expansion, combined with steady progress in wind energy, reflects a strategic focus on harnessing diverse renewable energy sources. The success of government initiatives like the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana highlights the importance of policy-driven efforts in driving clean energy adoption across the country.

With a total installed renewable energy capacity of 209.44 GW, India is firmly on track to become a global renewable energy powerhouse. This remarkable progress not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also enhances energy security and fosters economic growth.
