The UK’s Bold Plan for a 95% Clean Energy Future by 2030

The UK government has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to generate 95% of the nation’s electricity from clean energy sources by 2030, marking a transformative leap towards energy independence. The plan also includes integrating consumer-led flexibility, such as EV battery-to-grid technology, to manage storage demands. For periods of low sun and wind, carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) and hydrogen-to-power generation will bolster the energy mix.

Nuclear Power and Hydrogen

The government reaffirmed its commitment to nuclear energy, with upcoming decisions on Sizewell C and a small modular reactor programme scheduled for 2025. Meanwhile, a Hydrogen Strategy Update will soon outline hydrogen’s expanding role in the energy mix.

Tackling Grid and Planning Bottlenecks

Recognizing the barriers slowing the energy transition, the government plans to overhaul the grid connection process and reform planning systems. Key changes include:

• Grid Connection Reform: Ending the first-come-first-served approach to prioritize projects ready to deliver power.

• Planning and Infrastructure Bill: Accelerating approvals for energy infrastructure projects.

With the current grid connection queue swelling to a 10-fold increase over the past five years, these reforms aim to reduce wait times and fast-track viable projects.

Creating Jobs in Clean Energy

The transition promises to create thousands of high-quality jobs, particularly in regions grappling with industrial decline. The Office for Clean Energy Jobs, established earlier this year, will assist communities transitioning from carbon-intensive industries to clean energy sectors.
